Series Statement
I create public site-specific installations, and through the action of yarn bombing, I literally take my art making to the streets to the vast culturally diverse populations of Los Angeles. Armed with fiber as my palette and the urban landscape as my canvas I create a new type of grafitti performance using sculpture to evoke public view and discussion. Engaging a broader cross-section of the public than would attend a gallery or museum exhibition, I am bringing art to the people.
By invitation or guerilla-like takeover, recent project sites include the Craft And Folk Art Museum, 18th Street Art Center, Union Center for the Arts, Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, and the Trespass Parade, an official opening event for Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980. For the project CAFAM: Granny Squared, I collaborated with Yarn Bombing Los Angeles to cover the façade of the Craft And Folk Art Museum with crocheted granny squares, contrasting the perceptions of architecture as high art and craft as low art.
The collaborative nature of many of my projects brings people of disparate backgrounds and cultures together to work toward a common goal. Hosting workshops, stitch-ins and work parties, I facilitate cross-cultural dialogue about history, common traditions and placemaking.
