Body Cocoons

Manipulating elements of texture and line to mimic and exaggerate the fluidity and movement of the human form, I create knitted sculptures that react with the viewer and their environment. Some reach out from the walls, while those suspended from the ceilings sway gently, responding to changes in air currents. These forms are both protective and open.

The Body Cocoons are often compared to the abstract sculptures of Ruth Asawa and Constantin Brâncuși. Flattered by the comparison and as homage, I seek to further the dialog by personalizing their traditions. I insert my own theme of concealing and revealing ourselves through our outward appearances.

Industrial Domestics

Creating a juxtaposition between industrial materials such as flagging tape used on construction sites with homespun techniques such as knitting and crocheting, the choice of materials and the selection of a garish color palette are all intended to question the assumptions society makes about gender.

The flagging tape unexpectedly provides the perfect gauge to create in the larger scale I envisioned for this series. At the same time, the use of industrial materials challenged me to create a new set of tools to suit the scale and to force compliance.

Interventions

I create public site-specific installations, and through the action of yarn bombing, I literally take my art making to the streets to the vast culturally diverse populations of Los Angeles. Armed with fiber as my palette and theurban landscape as my canvas I create a new type of grafitti performance using sculpture to evoke public view and discussion. Engaging a broader cross-section of the public than would attend a gallery or museum exhibition, I am bringing art to the people.

By invitation or guerilla-like takeover, recent project sites include the Craft And Folk Art Museum, 18th Street Art Center, Union Center for the Arts, Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, and the Trespass Parade, an official opening event for Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945-1980. For the project CAFAM: Granny Squared, I collaborated with Yarn Bombing Los Angeles to cover the façade of the Craft And Folk Art Museum with crocheted granny squares, contrasting the perceptions of architecture as high art and craft as low art.

The collaborative nature of many of my projects brings people of disparate backgrounds and cultures together to work toward a common goal. Hosting workshops, stitch-ins and work parties, I facilitate cross-cultural dialogue about history, common traditions and placemaking.

Vessels

I have been perfecting my knotting artistry for over 45 years. Working with simple materials such as cotton string and rope, I sculpt each vessel carefully selecting and meticulously tying thousands upon thousands of knots. This labor-intensive technique, the process of making the work, becomes just as important as the resulting form.

There is also a certain intimacy in my knotted work that is borne of the process itself. Each knot is a moment of my time spent in studio, providing structure and bringing a sense of order to the chaotic lengths of string and rope.

The knots I use most in my work are a contemporary form of Macramé. I wrote the book Macramé Today: Contemporary Knotting Projects to teach others the techniques and processes which first inspired me as an artist.

About

Darlyn Susan Yee

Biography

Darlyn Susan Yee is a Los Angeles-based artist whose practice weaves together traditional and unexpected materials into complex designs that engage a dialogue between art, design and craft. Her meticulous, labor-intensive processes result in fiber-based sculptures and installations. She engages a dialogue that crosses cultural understandings of identity, gender and place. Complex, but with a sense of whimsy, Darlyn's explorations of presence and containment encompass large installations to small handheld vessels.

To contrast the perceptions of architecture as high art and craft as low art, Darlyn collaborated with Yarn Bombing Los Angeles on CAFAM: Granny Squared. The project to cover the façade of the Craft And Folk Art Museum with crocheted granny squares brought together over 500 contributors from 27 countries and 50 states. On the closing weekend of Art In The Streets at Geffen Contemporary at MOCA, Darlyn and other artists yarnbombed their cars in Have Yarn Will Travel to showcase another form of graffiti intervention.

Darlyn's artwork has been shown internationally in museums and galleries, and has garnered numerous awards. She was included in 100 Artists of the West Coast II by Schiffer Books, the publisher of her book Macramé Today: Contemporary Knotting Projects. Her work is featured in numerous private and public collections.

Statement

I create fiber-based socially engaging figurative sculptures and installations to engage the viewer to explore the relationship between materials and form. I recontextualize the more femininized traditions and practices of fiber art inverted through the use of industrial materials to explore issues of gender identity, sense of place and purpose, and cultural identity and commonality. My recent focus is on repurposing and up-cycling materials using traditional fiber techniques to create installations of exaggerated clothing, and temporary public art displays.

I manipulate texture and form through style combinations including hand knotting, knitting and manually altered machine knitting techniques with crochet. The more compliant fiber materials I use include cotton, wool, mohair, linen, lurex, acrylic, nylon yarns and cotton string and rope. Mastering traditional techniques with more cumbersome materials such as flagging and barricade tapes challenged me to create a new set of tools. I choose to work with all of these materials because of their tactility.
